FOREWORD

'RCHITECTURE is a science of art; not imita-
tation, but creation is its aim — "because the soul
is progressive it never quite repeats itself, but in
every act attempts the production of a new and fairer
whole." In each new work the artist exalts the features
which please him most, but it is impossible for him to be
so imaginative, so original as not to have the old art in-
fluence the new. From the works of his forerunner as well
as from the character of the period in which he, himself,
lives — its religion, government, customs — from all these his
work must grow. Genius is great, but even genius cannot
surmount these facts. Eacli age has a new and clearer ap-
preciation of beauty for genius and imagination to grow
out of. The great architect must give his work largeness,
completeness, nobility of structure by the use of the imagin-
ation in as true a sense as the great poet or painter
Technique and skill arc valuable assets and we all admire
them, but "we listen not to criticism when our hearts are
touched by genius.
